Former Council Member Jim Cunningham Endorses Torrey Powers
Poway, CA -- Jim Cunningham, former Poway City Council member whose resignation in June created a vacancy on the council, has announced his support of Torrey Powers for the “short term” seat in the November 6 election.
Cunningham served on the City Council for 10 years. He is a longtime advocate for veterans, first responders, including firefighters, and families with special needs. His departure was followed by the controversial appointment of Caylin Frank, an outsider, to fill Cunningham’s open seat -- a decision that drew protests from residents across the city.
Former Poway City Councilman Jim Cunningham issued the following statement:
"As a 25 year resident of Poway and your councilman for 10 years, I know that Poway is a unique and special community that needs council members who ‘get’ Poway, the City in the Country. Torrey Powers is a lifelong resident of Poway who has volunteered on the playgrounds of her kid’s schools here in Poway, volunteered in our community, bought her family’s food and goods from our merchants, and played, hiked and recreated in our open spaces and parks. She understands the needs of our veterans and the challenges they face. For those reasons and many more I am endorsing Torrey Powers to replace me on the City Council."
Torrey Powers, candidate for the short-term Poway City Council seat, said the following:
“We are thrilled by Jim Cunningham’s endorsement and humbled by his support. His announcement confirms what we have been hearing from voters across our beautiful city: that we need a fresh perspective and a new voice for working families in Poway. Advocating for affordable housing for our veterans is one of the top priorities of our campaign, and we are excited to count on the support of one of the community’s strongest voices on this issue.”
