Mayor Vaus Doubles Down on Misguided City Council Appointment
Poway, CA -- On Tuesday, Poway Mayor Steve Vaus doubled down on his misguided decision to fill a vacant City Council seat in June by appointing someone who moved to Poway just three months before. This effectively gave his appointee, Council Member Caylin Frank, the benefit of the incumbency heading into the upcoming November elections.
During a City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 18, Vaus spoke out of order during the public oral statements -- where city elected officials are to listen and not speak -- and used the power of his mayoral office to attack Frank’s opponents while on taxpayer dime.
Torrey Powers, At-Large Candidate for the Poway City Council, said the following:
“I am running precisely because for far too long politicians like Vaus have been rigging the system at the expense of our communities and depriving voters of fair elections free of outside influence. Mayor Vaus needs to stop using his official position as mayor to bully members of the community who stood up to his ill-advised decision to appoint an outsider to represent Powegians.
We need put Poway first, not use Poway as a political steppingstone. As a fourth-generation Powegian, I am committed to maintaining the spirit of Poway without selling out to developers. That means promoting sustainable smart growth, creating new local business opportunities and moderate and affordable housing so families can truly thrive in our beautiful city.”
